ASMA — Yesterday and Today

Maritime education in Azerbaijan traces its roots to the late nineteenth century — to 1881. The Azerbaijan State Marine Academy itself was established in 1996, during the years of independence, opening a new chapter in the development of maritime education.

The road to the Academy

As a maritime nation, Azerbaijan needed an institution capable of training highly qualified seafarers. On the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev and by a 1996 decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Azerbaijan State Marine Academy was founded on the basis of the Baku Maritime School.

International recognition

From its first day the Academy has built its programmes around the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Core curricula, study plans and state standards were developed and approved for every programme, and accepted by the IMO.

The Academy is listed in the catalogue of the world maritime education system under number 012. Its diploma is recognised in more than 170 countries.

Today

The Academy delivers teaching that meets modern standards at every level of maritime education — bachelor's, master's and doctoral. Its student body includes both Azerbaijani and international students.
