Sport

Physical fitness is part of a seafarer’s profession. The Academy has a swimming pool and gyms and the sports sections of the Physical Education and Sport Department; inter-faculty competitions are held every year.

How to join a section

  1. Physical Education and Sport Department

    Choose a sport

    Optional sections in swimming, sailing, volleyball, football, basketball, wrestling and other sports.

  2. Department, Student Youth Organisation

    Contact the department

    To join a section, speak to the department’s lecturers. Academy teams recruit through announcements; the Student Youth Organisation and the trade union’s Sports Society help to organise student competitions.

    Inter-faculty competitions, inter-university events dedicated to the birthday of national leader Heydar Aliyev, and sailing races at sea on national holidays.

Sports Competitions

Department and sections

The Physical Education and Sport Department has been independent since 19 May 2004; from 1996 to 2004 the subject was taught within the Humanities Department. Alongside swimming and seamanship classes, the department runs optional sections: swimming, sailing, volleyball, football, basketball, wrestling and other sports. Students also compete in football, volleyball, wrestling and chess at national and Academy level.

Sailing and water sports

Sailing races are held at sea on national holidays. Students race sailing boats and take part in other water sports — keeping up the physical fitness a seafarer needs.
